La Sagrada Familia is an enormous Catholic basilica which is an oeuvre of Catalonian architect Antonio Gaudí. This architectural treasure is the universal symbol of the city of Barcelona and the greatest exponent of Catalonian Art Nouveau. The construction of La Sagrada Familia started in 1882, in a Neo-Gothic style, and when Gaudí was entitled to be in charge one year later he rethought the whole construction concept and turned the idea in what it is today: a prominent temple of curvy shapes, towers and sculptures of an unrepeatable complexity. After Gaudí’s death, the original plans and strokes he had left on paper were respected and are still being respected during the building process.

To admire La Sagrada Familia is an accessible luxury to everyone. The best option is to take the elevator to get to the top and admire all of its beauty, or use the spiral staircase and get to admire all of the great and tiny details from a short distance.

The basilica has been built with bricks, stone, tiles and glass that combine with each other in an almost magical way. The building’s amazing towers, that are over 100 meters high, will highly impress you, and so will the interior of the building where naves, cloisters and a museum with original sketches, models and unique furniture will compel you to walk around the history and want to see every last detail of of this World Heritage Site.

In November 2010 La Sagrada Familia was consecrated and proclaimed a minor basilica by the Pope Benedict XVI.
