Douro International Nature Park - Protected areas Integrating the counties of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, Freixo de Espada à Cinta, Miranda do Douro and Mogadouro, the International Douro Nature Park covers 122 kilometres of border stretch of the Douro River and its tributar, the Águeda River. Surrounding the valleys of these two rivers, there are two plateaux areas (mainly granitic), one in the north with elevations that are around 700-800 meters and another in the south with 600-700 meters of altitude. The gorges carved by the rivers Douro and Águeda are extremely deep (reaching over 200 meters) and of great beauty, although different, because in the International Douro were built five dams, while the Águeda river still flows freely. The park reaches its maximum altitude (895 meters) quite near the northern border with Spain, at Nossa Senhora da Luz, and the minimum altitude (125 meters) just before the limit of the park, very close to Barca de Alva. The steep banks, also known as “arribas”, offer a rich wildlife, especially in relation to nesting birds: the Griffon Vulture, the Egyptian Vulture, the Black Stork, the Golden Eagle, the Bonelli's Eagle, among others. The International Douro Nature Park has its headquarters in Mogadouro and two branches, one in Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo and the other in Miranda do Douro.
