Built by Sabatini, during the reign of Charles III, The Puerta de Alcalá (The Alcala Gate) is an unequivocal symbol of the city of Madrid. In a neoclassic style, the Gate has 5 arches, the main 3 are round arches and two of them are exterior trabeated arches. Made of granite and white stone from the Sierra de Madrid. It is located in the Plaza de la Independencia (Indepedence Square), unaware of its old hierarchical use. As far as we are concerned, the central and biggest arch was reserved for the King and the Noble people; starting by the centre and continuing by the sides, the following arches would be for middle-high class people, the side arches (the smallest) for the lower classes. Next to the main entrance to El Retiro gardens, the Alcalá street crosses the square branching into Alfonso XII, Serrano and Olózaga streets. For many years, under the diminished arches the sheep flock has passed under (seasonal migration of livestock).
