This square is the nexus, through calle de Jaume I and Ferran, of two important avenues of the city of Barcelona: Vía Layetana and la Rambla. Plaça de Sant Jaume was inaugurated with the name of “Plaza de La Constitución” and it is at the flanks of the Palau de la Generalitat and the City Hall building, which adapted its current structure in the year 1840. The State of Catalonia was proclaimed in 1931 in this plaza. It was also the scene of the return from the exile of Josep Tarradellas in 1977 and the setting for the celebrations of the titles of F.C. Barcelona and its crowd of fans gathering together in the plaza.
