It is located in the square of Portal of Pau at the end of the Ramblas and in front of the Port of Barcelona. It measures 60 meters in height and was constructed with the objective of Universal Exhibition of 1888 to pay homage to the discoverer of America. The Columbus monument is divided into three parts. The first is a circular base, with eight lions and allegoric statues of Catalunya, Aragon, Castilla and Leon as well as characters related to the life of Columbus and the discovery of America. The second is the iron column with statue of caravels, Griffin and figures winged on its base. The last is the statute of Columbus, work of bronze in 7 meters of height. It has an elevator which takes the visitor to the hemisphere situated at the foot of Columbus, from where one can divide the entire city.
