Real Monastery la Encarnación

Founded in 1611 by Philip III and Marguerite of Austria and located in the square with the same name, the Monastery of the Encarnación is a piece of art by Architects Juan Gómez de Mora and Fray Alberto de la Madre de Dios. The convent keeps important pictorial and sculptural pieces of art from the 17th and 18th centuries, with works by Lucas Jordán, Juan Van der Hammen, Vicente Carducho, Gregorio Fernández or Pedro de Mena. Special attention must be paid to the reliquary which gathers 700 pieces in bronze, coral, ivory, fine woods from Italy, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands. It is, together with the Descalzas Reales (The Royal Barefoot Nuns), one of the most outstanding temples in the city; in the church there are two reliquaries which apparently contain the blood of Saint Januarius and Saint Pantaleon; the blood from this saint (according to tradition) becomes fluid and bubbles every year on the saint´s day, on 27 July.
