The Monasterio del Escorial (The Monastery of El Escorial) is 50 kilometres away from the city, to the North-East of Madrid. It was built during the reign of Philip II. The monastery was finished by Juan de Herrera in 1584, who stamped its architectonic stamp called herreriano style, characterised by emphatising the front line abusing elements? Of recent creation and places not to miss are the Art Gallery and the Architecture Museum. In 1931 it was declared Heritage of Cultural Interest in the category of National Monument and in 1984 it was appointed World´s Heritage by the UNESCO.
